Safety First

"Slow down every time you see a white car — that's the safe message," says Houston Police Department Chief, Harold Hurtt.

As Nikki pointed out this morning while reading the paper over breakfast, surely the safe message, Chief Hurtt, would be "Don't exceed the speed limit."

Do they also recommend to drop the beer can when seeing a police car?

I'm guessing... If I really slow down every time I seen a white car... Most likely, I'll never make it to my destination. Cool... can I use it as an excuse for being late to work in the morning???

I totally agree with Nikki - don't exceed the speed limit. In this country (Scotland) we have a lot of speed cameras which photograph your car if you speed past them; then you will get points on your licence and a £60 fine. Too many points and you're banned. People moan that they are being unfairly caught out by these things! They even got them to change the design so they are luminous yellow with black stripes! They are also in very obvious places (not hidden). It's funny but I've never been caught out because I drive past them at the speed limit and they don't flash me!! It's simple really. It's gotten so bad here that there is a black market in paying people to take your points and fine for you if you've already got points thus avoiding a ban. A nameless person has asked me if I would do this. NO WAY!! I want speeders to be banned! (Especially stupid speeders who can't slow down when they go past the camera ;-) )
Rant over for now...
I decided not to even join in with Lizzie's rant as I am pregnant and it would harm the baby to get stressed. My solution to that problem is not to fly with children.

Dropping the beer can is now necessary, yes. It's now illegal for you to be drinking beer while driving, so if you see a car, drop the beer can. That's the safe message.

Yes Philippe, you do need to slow down, every time you see a white car, even if you're late for work. I know SLB are all about safety, so even if you don't get there until 12:45, that's what you have to do.

It always seems a little silly to admit you were breaking the law, but you'd have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky cameras. I've been done for speeding a couple of times and I deserved it both times. Luckily over here you can just promise not to do it again for 3 months and pay a fine and it goes away with no impact on your insurance.

I think that's so funny that you can promise not to do it again for 3 months, pay a fine and that's it! The system of banning you once you reach a certain number of points is quite a good deterrent (except for the folk who pay someone to take the points and don't get found out). Some bloke got jailed for taking points for his son a few months back.
I've not been done for speeding but I have been done for driving without due care and attention, fined £75 and given 6 points when I was 21. Iain and I have both written off one car each so I guess we're trying to be more careful these days!

Um, maybe, but then, you do tend to get up at 5 o'clock in the morning a lot. That would make anyone a bit ranty.
